Zero Waste Marin worked with SCS Engineers to complete a Waste Characterization Study (WCS). The goal of the Study was to determine the composition of the material being landfilled across all of Marin County. Zero Waste Marin worked with SCS Engineers, all five of Marin’s waste haulers, and the Novato Redwood Landfill to coordinate collecting eight 200-pound samples over the course of two weeks. The results of the study are summarized in the report.
ZWM contracted with Sparkl Reusables to provide reusable dishware, collection, and dishwashing services at the Thursday Civic Center Farmers’ Market. The goal was to determine the feasibility of a reusable foodware program in a farmers’ market setting, and to reduce single-use waste from prepared food vendors. ZWM collaborated with Sparkl and the Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM) to survey vendors and customers about their opinions on the pilot. This project was funded for a three-month pilot program. The reusable pilot program officially launched at the Thursday Civic Center Farmers’ Market on January 2nd, 2025 and ran through March 27th, 2025.

Zero Waste Marin worked with HF&H Consultants in 2024 to complete an Edible Food Recovery Capacity Report. This report provides an overview of the edible food recovery landscape in Marin County, and estimates available capacity for recovery of surplus edible food. This report was completed due to a requirement from State agency CalRecycle and to comply with State law SB 1383.

The amount of solid waste disposed in landfills has increased in recent years at statewide and local levels. Due to this increase in disposal and the changes in recycling markets, Zero Waste Marin hired R3 Consulting Group to provide an update to the Zero Waste Feasibility Study. This study was designed to guide the next steps and provides a roadmap for Zero Waste Marin.
Alongside the Zero Waste Feasibility study an Organizational Assessment was also performed by R3 Consulting Group, which provides insight into the governance, staffing, and coordination of the agency with its 11 incorporated cities and the County.
