Marin County residents can safely recycle household batteries and fluorescent bulbs for free through the Bulb & Battery Take-Back Program at participating businesses. This program helps keep hazardous waste out of landfills.
Businesses must take their hazardous waste to designated facilities in San Rafael or Novato.
Find a drop-off location near you and learn how to dispose of batteries and bulbs the right way!
There is a safe, legal, and convenient method to dispose of small quantities of household bulbs and batteries at a number of participating businesses throughout the county.
The Bulb and Battery Take-Back Program is designed to encourage Marin County residents to properly recycle their used household batteries, compact fluorescent lamps, and fluorescent tubes – free of charge – at convenient retail locations. Note that car batteries are not accepted through this program.
Batteries and fluorescent bulbs are considered household hazardous waste because they contain toxic heavy metals and have corrosive properties. They can pose a serious threat to public health when combined with household trash and have been banned from disposal at all landfills statewide.
This program is designed for Marin County residents only. Businesses should continue to dispose of their hazardous waste at the hazardous waste facilities in San Rafael or Novato.

In our increasingly electronic world, consumers are using more batteries and products with batteries than ever before. Some of these batteries can also be found in e-bikes and scooters. Batteries can be defective, damaged, or recalled and must be handled properly. To learn how to safely dispose of batteries and find additional battery locations in the County, visit Call2Recycle.
You can also contact the Marin or Novato HHW facility to find more information.
It is illegal in California to dispose of HHW in your curbside carts or through abandonment.
