Currently, the Household Hazardous Waste Facilities in Marin do not accept smoke detectors because they might contain a small amount of radioactive material. Call the manufacturer of the smoke detector and find out if they have a Take-Back Program. If they do, return your expired smoke detector to the manufacturer. If they don’t, remove the batteries and discard in the trash.
