Household Hazardous Waste Requires Safe Disposal Household hazardous waste must be taken to an approved collection facility. Placing hazardous waste in trash, recycling, or organics carts is illegal in California. Products such as paint, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, pesticides, and household chemicals can create fire, health, and environmental hazards if improperly disposed of.
